Our project explores topics surrounding youth mental health—including depression, eating disorders, and suicide—as well as the experiences of young people navigating parental incarceration. Because these themes can be deeply personal or challenging, we’ve gathered resources below from our partners at NAMI New York State and See Us, Support Us (SUSU). If you or a loved one are seeking support or a safe space to share your story, these organizations can connect you with local resources.

NAMI New York State is the state organization of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), the nation’s largest grassroots organization dedicated to supporting people with mental illness and their families. Founded in 1979, NAMI has affiliates in every state and more than 1,100 local communities across the country.

Through more than 22 affiliates across New York State, NAMI New York State provides support, education, and resources to individuals living with mental illness, as well as their families and loved ones.

See Us, Support Us (SUSU) raises awareness about and increases support for children experiencing the incarceration of a parent, highlighting young people’s voices, strengths and needs. It is a space where young people can tap into resources and encouragement—you are not alone!

SUSU is coordinated by the Osborne Association’s NY Initiative for Children of Incarcerated Parents and led by the SUSU Youth Team and SUSU partners, which include people who have experienced parental incarceration, organizations serving children of incarcerated parents, and allies.”
